A vila de Sesimbra fica situada a 40 quilómetros a sul de Lisboa, a sua costa rica
em peixe e virada a sul proporciona bom abrigo durante grande parte do ano. A partir do
século XV, com o desenvolvimento da pesca e da construção naval, a população foi-se
deslocando do castelo para a baía, passando a vila a ficar situada junto ao mar.
O objetivo da presente dissertação de mestrado é o de melhorar o conhecimento
da história de Sesimbra e da sua relação com o mar, no período compreendido entre 1860
e 1926.
Pesquisas efetuadas: Após averiguação da informação existente em livros, teses e
outros artigos, procedeu-se à pesquisa e compilação de informação nos Arquivos
Históricos da Marinha, da Guarda Nacional Republicana e das Comunicações, no
Arquivo Municipal de Sesimbra, Biblioteca Central de Marinha e Museu de Marinha. Os
documentos foram fotografados, tendo-se criado um ficheiro digital, que serviu de base à
elaboração da dissertação.
Assuntos da dissertação:
Após a introdução, é mencionada a metodologia que foi utilizada e feita referência
a Sesimbra, seu território, história e demografia. Faz-se depois referência às questões
relacionadas com a pesca, estatísticas, pessoal, embarcações, venda do peixe, descrição
das artes de pesca e questões relacionadas com o seu exercício, nomeadamente da pesca
do anzol, das redes e das armações de sardinha à valenciana.
Em seguida, é feita referência às autoridades civis, militares e marítimas presentes
em Sesimbra, aos faróis, ao Semáforo do Cabo Espichel, ao telégrafo e aos telefones, e
ainda aos processos e sentenças da autoridade marítima.
É feita depois referência aos socorros e naufrágios ocorridos na costa de Sesimbra,
aos eventos relacionados com a 1ª Guerra Mundial e às diversas embarcações que
demandavam o porto de Sesimbra. Por último, é efetuada a análise do trabalho realizado
e tiradas as ilações finais.
Sesimbra is located 40 kilometres south of Lisbon, its coast is rich in fish and faces south providing good shelter for most of the year. From the 15th century onwards, with the development of fishing and shipbuilding, the population moved from the castle to the bay, the village then became located next to the sea. The purpose of this master's dissertation is to improve the knowledge of the history of Sesimbra and its relationship with the sea, in the period between 1860 and 1926. Research carried out: After investigating the existing information in books, in academic theses and in other articles, research and compilation of information was carried out in Arquivo Histórico da Marinha, Arquivo Histórico da Guarda Nacional Republicana, Arquivo Histórico das Comunicações, Arquivo Municipal de Sesimbra, Biblioteca Central de Marinha and Museu de Marinha. The documents were photographed, and a digital file was created, which served as the basis for the execution of the master's dissertation. Dissertation topics: After the introduction, the methodology that was used is mentioned and reference is made to Sesimbra, its territory, history and demography. Reference is then made to issues relating to fishing, statistics, personnel, vessels, sale of fish, description of fishing gear and issues related to its exercise, particularly hook fishing, net fishing and fishing with sardine traps in the Valencian style.. Reference is made to the civil, military and maritime authorities present in Sesimbra, the lighthouses, the Cabo Espichel Semaphore Station, the telegraph and telephones and also the processes and sentences of the maritime authority. Reference is made to the rescues and shipwrecks that occurred on the coast of Sesimbra, to the events related to the World War I and to the various vessels that demanded the port of Sesimbra. Finally, the work carried out is analysed and final conclusions are drawn.
