This Master's dissertation on Gender History describes and analyzes the participation of women in the development of East-Timor after the independence, especially in the economic and education domains. For this purpose, we have collected all the (scarce) available documentation and we have interviewed not only women involved in economic and educational activities but also the leaders of public institutions and non-governmental organizations that promote gender equality and the empowerment of women in East-Timor. We have come to the conclusion that women have indeed been participating in the development of their young nation, educating at home the future generations of citizens, working as farmers, saleswomen, teachers and even as businesswomen. Yet many of them do not do it to the maximum of their capacity because they did not have either the opportunity or the financial means to acquire the knowledge and the equipment essential to their professional activities or their business. Thus the public institutions and the NGOs need to keep promoting the expansion of the capabilities of the women in East-Timor in order for them to participate more intensely in the development of the country and in the same conditions as men.
