With the COVID-19 pandemic, the activities of Public Health Units were focused mostly on pandemic control, with Units and Public Health physicians playing a predominant role in combating it. As a result, School Health Services suffered a negative impact, with this work being practically halted and potentially harmed. This situation warrants analysis and diagnosis of its main obstacles and opportunities so that efforts can be made towards quality School Health Education that has positive impacts on the literacy, behaviors, and health of children and adolescents in our country and the future adult population. The objective of this work is to diagnose School Health Programs at the local and national levels, including the most significant challenges faced, through a review of the existing literature. Despite some lack of publicly accessible information, we conducted a diagnosis of how School Health is structured in Portugal and globally. We defined priorities and selected strategies to address gaps, including proposals for a more in-depth situational analysis. This reflection will be organized according to the health planning process.
