Resumo(s)
3D technologies are taking part in the evolution process of society, in Cultural Heritage Conservation is no exception. By providing a new approach to the execution and the restoration process in a work of art, they change and innovate the conservator role. This master project describes the volumetric reconstruction process of the sculpture "The Sacrifice of Isaac" by Simon Troger, which belongs to Pena National Palace collection in Sintra, Portugal. With 61,5 cm of height, made with ivory and wood. This artefact had two missing parts that compromised its visual reading, namely Abraham’s sword and the left arm of the Isaac. In this intervention 3D technologies such as laser-scanning, photogrammetry, 3D modelling and 3D printing, were combined with artistic production techniques, to make moulds and castings for both parts. Through combination it was possible to reconstruct the visual reading with similarity to the original piece of art, as requested by the owner without distracting the observer with new and different elements. The 3D technologies were used to acquire surface data from a referent sculpture located in Brescia, in Italy. This Artefact was made by the same author and with the same thematic, but it has 265 cm of height, which means that has much larger dimensions compared to the sculpture in study. With digital data gathered from the original, both missing parts were 3D printed in Fused Filament Fabrication and afterwards were utilized to make moulds and cast the elements to traditional techniques in a material that represents ivory’s physical appearance. This intervention is an example of the contribution that these technologies can offer to the area of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage and its results intends to state that 3D technologies are very useful and innovator in the field, however they don’t represent the final intervention, but a way to achieve it. These technologies applied to Cultural Heritage must not replace the artist’s work, besides the creativity he has the knowledge of the technical artistic production. In interventions as mentioned above, is always necessary a multidisciplinary collaboration in the Cultural Heritage field, namely a Conservator-restorer and a sculptor. This methodology was used in the work that is referred in this project, because the main author is a sculptor and two of the co-authors are Conservators-restorers. The inclusion of an artist is very important because he has the technical and anatomy knowledge to reconstruct the missing parts, as the Conservator supervises all the work. This project intends to reinforce the idea that, depending on the resoration process that one specific work of art needs, it is very relevant to include a specialized artist, whether it’s a sculptor for volumetric reconstruction, or a painter for chromatic reintegration.
