No primeiro capítulo apresenta-se uma descrição preliminar de amadorismo incompatível com as noções tradicionais de “bens internos” e de “virtude”. Por consequência, recusa-se a ideia de que o amadorismo seja uma actividade desinteressada. No segundo capítulo, critica-se a noção tradicional de “bens internos”, sublinhando que ela despreza o interesse próprio de um praticante pela actividade a que esses bens são relativos. Para além disso, questiona-se a ideia de que uma prática possa determinar a atitude de um praticante em relação ao exercício dessa prática. O terceiro capítulo tenta esclarecer o que é uma atitude amadora. Isto obriga a definir aquele interesse, explicando por que razão ser amador só pode ser entendido em termos públicos.
Abstract: The first chapter offers a preliminary description of amateurism which is incompatible with the traditional notions of “internal goods” and of “virtue”. In addition, it will be held that amateurism is not a disinterested form of activity. The second chapter analyses the traditional understanding of “internal goods”, stressing that it ignores the practitioner’s self-interest on the activity those goods are relative to. Moreover, it will be argued that the practitioner’s attitude towards a practice cannot be determined by that practice. The third chapter tries to understand what an amateur attitude is. This poses the need to define such self-interest and to explain why being an amateur can only be understood in public terms.
