INTRODUCTION: The continuing development of methods and materials for root canal preparation, as single files in reciprocal motion, are the result in enhanced preparation techniques with only minor alterations to the canal morphology. Although these new methods and instruments improvements, maintain the original canal anatomy still is a challenge. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the shaping ability of 3 nickel-titanium reciprocating instruments on s-shaped simulated root canal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty simulated root canals were prepared and randomly divided into 3 groups (n=15) (Group A:WaveOne® Gold Medium, Group B:WaveOne® Gold Primary and Group C: Reciproc®). Standardized pre and postoperative images were taken using a digital camera, superimposed and then recorded. Transportation at coronal and apical curvatures and apex position were measured. All groups were statistically compared using analysis of variance, ANOVA complemented by Tukey’s test (P < 0.05.) RESULTS: The mean total width of the prepared canals in the WaveOne® Gold Medium group was greater than WaveOne® Gold Primary and Reciproc® groups on right side of the resin block. However, there was no significant differences between all groups on left transportation (P < 0.05). Inner coronal and apical curvature demonstrated greater modification than outer curvature. WaveOne® Gold Medium created greater amount of removal material on coronal and apical curvature. However, Reciproc® removed greater amount on inner coronal curvature, but not statistically significant. Apex position was evaluated to determine if affect the amount of absolute transportation. Although there is a difference in mean of apex position (WOGM 2,27; WOGP 2,44; R25 2,55) that do not influence the amount of transportation. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, WaveOne® Gold Medium demonstrated statistically greater transportation increasing the tendency of straightened root canal. WaveOne® Gold Primary best maintained the original anatomy of the s-shaped simulated root canal.
