No
The aim of this study was to report on the narratives published in the journal O Africano from 1908 to 1919, during part of the Portuguese colonization in Mozambique. The objectives of this work was to confirm the literary dimension of João Albasini's written chronicles, starting from the facsimiles of the newspapers O Africano and O Brado Africano kindly provided by Valdemir Zamparoni. The study concentrated then on the search of narrative elements and on the treatment given to the linguistic subject by Albasini in his texts, focalizing on the numerous narrative strategies and the study of heteronomy. We gathered our data from the chronicles collected by Paulo Soares and Valdemir Zamparoni (1992) in Antologia de textos do Jornal O Africano (1908-1919), as well as from the narratives studied by Juvenal Bucuane in his degree dissertation in linguistics at Eduardo Mondlane University, entitled A retórica de João Albasini (2001). The results allowed to reveal the presence of several significant structuring aspects for the characterization of the literary dimension in the writing of João Albasini as listed below: characters'creation; description and narrative representation of time and space; dramatization of the colonial subject through the creation of pen names and pseudonyms; literary inscription and the treatment of Bantu origin’s lexical loans in the use of the Portuguese language from Mozambique. Under the historical registration of the colonial thematic, we observed numerous critical themes such as the use of colonial wine, the palhota tax, the different work types, the education’s codes.
