The main goal of this research is the study of how the individuals experience the school-to-work transition period. Career planning and career exploration attitudes as well as the role salience concept were studied, using the Career Development Inventory (CDI) and the Salience Inventory (SI) and supported by career developmental approaches. The questionnaire “Experience the School-to-work Transition” was also constructed, which contributed to the analyses of important variables in the study of this transition. The instruments were administrated to a sample of 399 final year students and to another sample of 29 graduates from the Science Faculty of the University of Lisbon. The results indicated, in general, differences between sexes and between groups of majors and revealed the importance of factors that could influence the transition process in the career development stage of the individuals that have participated in the research. These results also provided the importance of studying on the experience of transition and the implications to the practice in counseling and career guidance programs related to individuals in the school-to-work transition process.
