O percurso e o desempenho profissionais de médicos (ou físicos) e cirurgiões que exerceram funções no Exército Português durante a Guerra Peninsular são hoje mal conhecidos. Qual era a sua formação, quais os seus antecedentes, em que condições exerciam as suas funções, como interagiam e que contributos deixaram para a medicina militar, a medicina em sentido lato e a sociedade, foram aspectos que pretendemos estudar, analisar e divulgar. Neste desiderato, propusemo-nos concomitantemente fazer uma pesquisa prosopográfica dos mesmos, procurando trazer novos dados à sua historiografia actual. Os normativos que regiam a actividade dos facultativos (nacionais ou estrangeiros) do Exército Português da época e as novas linhas de orientação da Saúde Militar que se sucederam (nas Cortes de 1821) foram outros aspectos que mereceram a devida atenção, quer no seu enquadramento institucional quer relativamente a consequências directas (reforma e retracção do dispositivo) no período imediato.
The professional course and performance of the physicians (medical doctors) and surgeons who worked in the Portuguese Army during the Peninsular War are now poorly known. What was their professional career, what was their background, in what conditions they performed their functions, how they interacted and what contributions they left to military medicine, to the medicine in the broad sense and to the society, were aspects that we intended to study, analyze and publicize. In this desideratum, we proposed simultaneously to make a prosopographical research, seeking to bring new data to their current historiography. The legislation that ruled the activity of the medical staff (both physicians and surgeons, either national or foreign) of the Portuguese Army at the time and the new guidelines of Military Health that followed (in the Courts of 1821) were other aspects that deserved due attention, both in their institutional framework and in relation to direct consequences (reform and retraction of the apparatus) in the following period.
