In the present study we analyze the Portuguese participations at the World’s
Fairs in the perspective of the 3-D Design. In the extent of this study we investigated the
areas of 3-D design, interior design spaces and equipment projects, industrial products
and elaborated a map of the official representations. All the World’s Fairs held between
1851 and 2010 in which Portugal participated are studied, highlighting the main
protagonists and entities who were involved as well as the historical contexts that
sustained them. The World’s Fairs were classified as such from 1928, according to the regulations issued by the Bureau International des Expositions, and this classification provides the basis for the events in which Portugal participated. However, we also analyzed some of the exhibits prior to this date. The World’s Fairs held every five years in different parts of the world are transformed in national advertising operations, where each nation shows the development of their products and their culture. Outside the criteria of International Exhibitions we have included some National Exhibitions by the
importance they had. This research aims to understand the evolution of the strategies present in the different editions related to the creation of an identity through design, with particular emphasis on the contribution that the 3-D design provides for its development. In addition to contributing to the Exhibition, Design itself also takes advantage of those participations, acquiring recognition abroad, opening new horizons for professionals and also allowing an evolution of this discipline. Therefore, with this investigation we can conclude that it is possible to establish a parallel path between the official representations and the national Design, building another view of the evolution of this discipline
