Although initially associated with a large number of adverse effects, the pill has been used by an increasing number of women, not only to control fertility, but also because of its non-contraceptive health benefits, being today the most widely used contraceptive method worldwide. However, due to various factors, there are still many myths and wrong ideas associated with oral contraceptives, particularly with regard to their benefits and adverse effects, which end up having a negative influence on their use. Accordingly, a questionnaire was applied to 162 volunteers of childbearing age, containing questions that seek to evaluate the knowledge of the non-contraceptive health benefits and adverse effects associated with oral contraception, particularly between users and non-users of this contraceptive method. As for the whole sample, although the percentage of correct answers has varied considerably between the different items, it was just, in general, higher in items related to benefits, being the highest percentage of uncertainties attributed to major adverse effects. When comparing both groups, it is concluded that most of the differences between them isn’t statistically significant, thus, there is no relation between the level of knowledge and the fact of women being or not users of the pill.
