Os suplementos alimentares são géneros alimentícios, cuja função é a de complementar uma dieta equilibrada. Na sua lata definição embarca uma grande variedade de opções de mercado, desde os produtos à base de plantas, aos dietéticos e às bebidas energéticas.
A alteração de alguns valores da sociedade nas últimas décadas levou à adoção de um estilo de vida mais saudável e “natural”. Na demanda por este bem-estar, o consumidor recorre muitas vezes aos suplementos alimentares, que embora benéficos em muitas situações, não são inócuos e como tal, podem representar um risco para a sua saúde.
O uso inadequado pela população, nomeadamente pelos jovens em busca da silhueta que vêm representada pelos media, a falta de fiscalização, as crescentes vendas pela internet e contaminações, são alguns dos problemas que põe em causa a segurança dos suplementos alimentares.
O presente trabalho pretende compreender de uma forma generalista os riscos inerentes ao uso de suplementos alimentares, sendo que são abordados com maior enfâse os dietéticos e a suplementação desportiva.
Dietary supplements are food, whose function is to supplement a balanced diet. Its broad definition englobes a wide range of market options, from herbal based products, to weight-loss supplements and energy drinks. In the last decades, society has been changing some of its values, which led to the adoption of an healthier and more “natural” lifestyle. In demand for this welfare, consumers appeal to dietary supplements that, in spite of its proved benefits in many situations, are not innocuous and as such, may represent a risk to human health. Inadequate use of these compounds by the population, mainly by the young, in search of the perfect silhouette promoted by the media, lack of control, increased online sales and contamination, are some of the problems that threaten the safety of dietary supplements. The main purpose of the present paper is to transmit the risks inherent to the use of dietary supplements from a general point of view, giving a special approach to the weight-loss, sports, and body building supplements.
