The transition to higher education is an emerging issue that brings a series of challenges and demands at a personal level, which ends up causing many issues of anxiety and stress for students who are undergoing this process. This exploratory study, through a qualitative methodology, intends to analyze how students perceive and experience this process by comparing their experiences when they were in the last year of secondary education with the current experiences of higher education. Interviews were conducted with 11 participants belonging to higher education, attending the first year for the first time. Through its comparative analysis, this study intends to understand whether there are differences between the experiences of students in secondary education and experiences now in higher education, in the themes of motivation, study methods, perceived difficulties, parental expectations and perceptions of success of students. It is also discussed how the expectations that students had about higher education support the experiences present at the university. In response to the questions in this study, differences were found in the different themes addressed, with special emphasis on the perceived difficulties, since these presented a great diversity of themes within the difficulties themselves. This study also demonstrated the student’s different perspectives on these themes and their diversity. In addition to answering these questions and highlighting the existing differences in these themes, this study presents suggestions for future studies and the contribution of this study to educational psychology.
