Social Emotional Learning skills are associated with school and academic success, positive social behaviors, mental health and positive attitudes about oneself and others. These skills are developed and learned during the first three years of life, the stage known as very early childhood. This period is marked by the baby's undeniable dependence on their parents, and it is in these relationships that the baby acquires the foundations for developing social and emotional skills. Furthermore, the challenges of parenting in this period are recognized, particularly for the well-being of the parents themselves. The aim of this study was to get to know parents' perspectives on social and emotional skills in child development and in the child's health/well-being, to understand how they promote them and to get to know their perceptions of self-care. The data was collected through individual online interviews and the sample consisted of 12 Portuguese mothers with children up to the age of three. Content analysis was carried out using the NVivo-14 program. The results revealed maternal behaviors that promote social and emotional skills in their children and showed that mothers hold beliefs that contribute to healthy child development. In addition, the mothers identified various sources of stress, including the children's characteristics and feelings of frustration and exhaustion. However, the majority recognized the importance of self-care for mental health and the maintenance of their identity, focusing mainly on the psychological and social dimensions. These results are discussed in the light of the literature, taking into account the limitations and contributions they can make to future studies and intervention with parents.
