Abstract(s)
Architecture is the art that allows us to design the spaces we dwell daily and which we inhabit in different ways. When designing, the architect’s role is to combine creativity with reason. It is essential to understand these spaces and their functions, as well as the actions that take place there and by whom they are carried out. Being a field of such overwhelming latitude, each project is unique and worthy of further research and reflection. Health is one of those unique fields and it encompasses Palliative Care. Palliative Care is the result of efforts aimed at answering to those striving with diseases which, unfortunately, have no prospective cure. The increase in life expectancy and the consequential rise in the development of chronic and progressive conditions, has resulted in an upsurge in demand and need for this particular field. Notwithstanding, this field is significantly underdeveloped in Portugal as it lacks the necessary equipment and further education. Architecture of End of Life Care provides an insightful understanding of the reach and influence of architecture in humanizing spaces intended for the provision of healthcare to terminal patients. It also regards the adequate environments and atmospheres that best accommodate the diverse number of uses made by the patients and the relatives, caregivers, and healthcare professionals that accompany them. The present Masters’s Final Project concerns an intervention on the Palliative Care Centre located in Foz do Lizandro, aimed at mitigating the above mentioned deficiencies observed in palliative care facilities. This is fundamentally demonstrated through the study and reflection of the essential aspects concerning the understanding of the needs and demands which spaces in a development stage require as well as the analysis of case studies regarding contemporary architectural approaches to healthcare.
