Objetivos: Este estudo visou identificar e compreender as representações das pessoas com 65
anos ou mais anos sobre a sua qualidade de vida (QdV) e formas de melhoria. Especificamente,
explorar os conceitos de QdV, as dimensões que contribuem para uma boa e reduzida QdV, as
dimensões mais valorizadas e o que permite melhorar a QdV. Método: A amostra foi
constituída por 65 indivíduos com 65 ou mais anos. A recolha de dados foi realizada a partir de
grupos focais, entrevistas e questionário de caracterização sociodemográfica e escala de
autoavaliação da QdV em geral. Resultados: A saúde, relações sociais, bem-estar psicológico
e papéis sociais/atividades foram as dimensões chave mais referidas pelas pessoas idosas no
conceito de QdV. Para uma boa QdV salientaram-se as relações sociais, papéis
sociais/atividades, bem-estar psicológico, crenças/valores/práticas e saúde. A contribuir para
uma reduzida QdV ressaltou o mal-estar psicológico, falta de saúde, ausência de
contacto/qualidade das relações sociais e economia doméstica deficitária. As dimensões mais
valorizadas relacionaram-se com a saúde e relações sociais. Para melhorar a QdV individual
emergiram a saúde e relações sociais e para a melhoria da QdV das pessoas da mesma idade o
acesso a serviços e infraestruturas.
Aims: This study aimed to identify and understand the older people (age of 65 or more) representations about their quality of life (QoL) and ways of improvement. More specifically, it aimed to explore their concepts of QoL, the dimensions that contribute the most for a good and bad QoL, the most valued QoL dimensions and what might contribute for QoL improvement. Method: The sample was constituted by 65 individuals with 65 or more years. The methods used in the study were focus group, interviews and sociodemographic questionnaires with overall personal-QoL scale. Results: Health, social relationships, psychological well-being and social roles/activities were associated to the meanings of QoL. For a good QoL, older people identified social relationships, social roles/activities, psychological well-being, beliefs/values/practices and health as key dimensions. About the poor QoL it was mentioned the psychological well-being, lack of health, lack of contact/quality of social relationships and reduced finances. The most important QoL dimensions were health and social relationships. To improve individual QoL health and social relationships emerged and to improve the QoL of others of the same age the most predominant wasservices and infrastructures
