Abstract(s)
VIII.
The Roman necropolis of Porto dos Cacos (CNS S-4143) is located on the manor of Rio Frio, in the municipality of Alcochete. The archaeological site was discovered In 1984, having lasted six excavation campaigns between 1985 and 1990, during which a pottery that, for about four centuries produced mainly amphorae an coarse ware, was identified. The necropolis was found in 1987 in a mound close to the pottery, confirming the presence of a permanent established population. The interruption of the field work was decided, for several reasons in 1990 and, by then, 37 graves of different types had been identified, corresponding exclusively to the ritual burial of inhumation. Of these, only 26 have been excavated, whose study, of both the building typology and funerary furniture, resulted in the present work. This necropolis, or the fraction of what is known today, illustrates part of the diachrony of occupation of this territory, between the fourth and the fifth centuries AD. Other signs point to a continued occupation of this space until the eigth century.
