A integração potencial dos desportos eletrónicos (Esports) nos Jogos Olímpicos constitui o foco central desta dissertação. Os Esports têm emergido como uma força significativa no panorama global, transcendendo as fronteiras do entretenimento e alcançando reconhecimento como uma forma legítima de desporto competitivo. Esta dissertação explora o desenvolvimento histórico dos Esports, as suas características distintivas e a evolução da sua aceitação mundial. Consideram-se os benefícios sociais, económicos e culturais da inclusão dos Esports nos Jogos Olímpicos, analisando simultaneamente os desafios e controvérsias associados, como a falta de atividade física tradicional e a perceção de violência em alguns jogos. Estudos de caso de países onde os Esports são oficialmente reconhecidos e promovidos, como a Coreia do Sul e a China, são apresentados para ilustrar o impacto positivo e as implicações estratégicas dessa aceitação. O objetivo é fornecer uma compreensão abrangente da interseção entre Esports e a gestão desportiva contemporânea, destacando as implicações para políticas desportivas, infraestrutura e inclusão social .
The potential integration of electronic sports (Esports) into the Olympic Games is the central focus of this dissertation. Esports have emerged as a significant force on the global stage, transcending the boundaries of entertainment and gaining recognition as a legitimate form of competitive sport. This dissertation explores the historical development of Esports, their distinctive characteristics, and the evolution of their global acceptance. The social, economic, and cultural benefits of including Esports in the Olympic Games are considered, while also examining the associated challenges and controversies, such as the lack of traditional physical activity and the perception of violence in some games. Case studies from countries where Esports are officially recognized and promoted, such as South Korea and China, are presented to illustrate the positive impact and strategic implications of this acceptance. The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between Esports and contemporary sports management, highlighting the implications for sports policies, infrastructure, and social inclusion.
