The main goal of this study within Family Psychology was to examine the mediating role of family cohesion in linking family ritual meaning to relationship satisfaction at both the individual and partner levels. Although the benefits of family rituals for individuals and families are known, the specific link between ritual meaning and marital satisfaction, and the possible mechanisms through which it occurs are still to be examined. The sample included 155 Portuguese couples, aged between 30 and 60 years-old, married or cohabitating for 5 to 36 years and with at least one child. Participants were recruited from the community using a convenience sampling process and a snowball strategy. The research protocol was filled out individually by each partner; it included a sociodemographic questionnaire, as well as the following self-report measures: Family Ritual Questionnaire (FRQ) (Fiese & Kline, 1993b) for assessing family ritual meaning; Family Environment Scale (FES) (Moos & Moos, 1986) for assessing family cohesion, and Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale (KMSS), (Schumm et al., 1986) for evaluating relationship satisfaction. Correlations showed that family ritual meaning was positively correlated with family cohesion and relationship satisfaction at both the individual and partner levels; family cohesion was also positively linked to relationship satisfaction for both individuals and their partners. The results from the final SEM model showed that both men and women’s family ritual meaning were indirectly, but not directly, linked to the participants’ and their partners’ relationship satisfaction through family cohesion. As expected, family cohesion was shown to be a significant mediator of the aforementioned associations. Finally, the contributions of this study are discussed considering the systemic model. Implications for future studies, as well as for clinical interventions with individuals, couples and families are discussed.
