Resumo(s)
A presente dissertação é um estudo semiótico-cognitivo sobre a construção
do pro-wrestling e da lucha libre em textos supostamente auto-biográficos
(escritos por actores/atletas e por escritores profissionais) , a saber, A Lion’s
Tale: Around the World in Spandex (2007) da autoria de Chris Jericho e
Peter Thomas Fornatale, e Rey Mysterio Behind The Mask (2009) da autoria
de Rey Mysterio e Jeremy Roberts.
Preconizamos que, mediante análise das ocorrências textuais das referidas
obras, classificadas em domínios semânticos, segundo o enquadramento
teórico semiótico-cognitivo de índole fenomenológica de Brandt (2004), é
possível descortinar diferentes modelos culturais que lhes subjazem.
Partindo do postulado cognitivo de que a construção do wrestling na mente
dos autores das obras é moldada pelas suas vivências sociais e culturais, ou
seja, de que o significado é indissociável da experiência, afigura-se possível
aceder aos modelos culturais subjacentes a estas mesmas vivências a partir
das respectivas representações linguísticas.
Em suma, o presente trabalho visa demonstrar que a visão dos autores sobre
a sua actividade profissional é influenciada pela sua formação e experiências
pessoais que se reflectem necessariamente nas metáforas usadas, emergentes
quer da intersecção dos diversos domínios semânticos básicos, quer da
intersecção dos diversos domínios-satélite de nível 1, ou mesmo de nível 2.
Deste modo, o conjunto dos frames semânticos vigentes nas duas obras em
estudo evidenciam uma construção diversa do wrestling na mente dos seus

autores que radica, desde logo, nas diferentes designações, a saber, prowrestling
e da lucha libre.
Abstract: The following dissertation is a cognitive-semiotic study on the construction of pro-wrestling and lucha libre in allegedly autobiographical texts (written by actors/athletes and by Professional writers), namely A Lion’s Tale: Around the world in Spandex (2007) by Chris Jericho and Peter Thomas Fornatale, and Rey Mysterio Behind The Mask (2009) by Rey Mysterio and Jeremy Roberts. We argue that by categorizing textual occurrences from the above mentioned works in semantic domains in the light of the phenomenologicaloriented cognitive-semiotic framework (Brandt 2004), we gain access to foreseeably different underlying cultural models. Taking as point of departure the cognitive postulate of the relation between social and cultural experiences and their mental construction of the authors, we advocate that the cultural models backgrounding wrestling can be uncovered by thorough analyses of the language-framed semantic domains . To sum up, this dissertation aims to demonstrate that the authors’ view of wrestling is shaped by their personal life experience, emerging either from the intersection of basic semantic domains or from the intersection of firstlevel, or even second-level satellite semantic domains. Thus, different linguistic frames from various semantic domains surface as cultural-oriented wrestling architectures in the mind of two authors that lies, as clearly 6 consecrated in the two distinct designations for wrestling, namely “ prowrestling” and “lucha libre”.
