Resumo(s)
The global human population is exceeding the limits of the planet and it continues to grow. This growth is most pronounced in the largest urban areas. It is important to rethink the organization of cities in order to keep up with this population growth and its consequences. Cities need to become more sustainable in order to minimize climate change, trying to find effective solutions for urban areas, with the aim of achieving a balance between the various dimensions of sustainability. Over the last few years, a variety of tools have been developed to assess urban sustainability, accompanied by the Sustainable Development Goals. With the aim of improving people's lives and providing a sustainable city, ISO Standard 37120 has targets and indicators for assessing and certifying cities and communities. This document helps the governance of cities to manage services and quality of life over time, supporting the development of policies and helping to define priorities. Through a variety of indicators, this Standard analyzes a city's sustainable development and monitors its performance, allowing cities to learn from each other and to compare evenly across a variety of categories. The internship that led to this report involved the application of ISO 37120 to a region in the north-east of mainland Portugal, looking at data from 2011-2023.
