O discurso teórico pós-colonial aborda os efeitos do colonialismo nas culturas e nas sociedades e define-se como uma área de estudo transdisciplinar cujo objetivo é fazer a fusão de uma série de conhecimentos acumulados em diferentes disciplinas da área das Ciências Sociais e Humanas, como a História de Arte, a Antropologia, a Sociologia, o Jornalismo, o Estudos dos Media, o Feminismo e os Estudos de Género. Na continuação desse espírito transdisciplinar, o presente projeto de Doutoramento teórico-prático em Belas Artes cruza a investigação sobre o discurso pós-colonial, a História e Teoria de Arte, a Etnografia com o discurso artístico pessoal analisado ao longo do percurso de 23 anos de prática artística. Na sua componente mais teórica demonstra-se como o discurso artístico se insere no discurso pós-colonial e como estes dois se complementam e se validam mutuamente. Paralelamente, cria-se uma obra de arte inédita que se pode integrar no campo expandido da escultura – A Tendency to Forget (2015) – e resulta de um processo investigativo sobre dois edifícios arquitetónicos com ligações à obra do casal de etnógrafos Jorge e Margot Dias. Dá-se particular atenção aos filmes etnográficos feitos por Margot Dias durante as campanhas etnográficas dirigidas pelo seu marido no norte de Moçambique nos finais dos anos 1950, que aqui funcionam como mote simbólico de uma problemática mais alargada, focando a chegada tardia e relativa fragilidade do discurso pós-colonial em Portugal e realçando a questão do apagamento da história colonial. Questiona-se ainda a relação comprometedora entre a ciência e a política colonial do Estado Novo. Assumiu-se a necessidade de reflexividade do discurso pós-colonial decorrente do seu enfraquecimento e da sua incapacidade em criar sociedades mais humanistas e pondera-se a possibilidade do seu esgotamento. Todavia, identifica-se a tendência de viragem no discurso e os contornos teóricos que possam definir as diferenças do atual momento, apelidado de após pós-colonial. Confirma-se, assim, a sua pertinência no contexto português e identifica-se mesmo uma necessidade de aprofundar a crítica. Em concordância com estas conclusões imbui-se a nova escultura de uma visualidade crítica mais incisiva.
The post-colonial discourse deals with the effects of colonization on cultures and societies. It is a transdisciplinary area of study which fuses knowledge from a number of research areas including the Social Sciences, History of Art, Anthropology, Sociology, Journalism, Media Studies, Feminism and Gender Studies. In the spirit of this transdisciplinary approach the following theoretical and practical doctoral project in Fine Arts weaves post-colonial, Art History and Ethnographic research with an analysis of personal artistic discourse over a 23 year period. In the theoretical component we show how the artistic discourse is inserted within the post-colonial discourse and how the two complement and validate each other. At the same time we created an original work of art in the expanded field of sculpture – A Tendency to Forget (2015) – the result of a research process focusing on two buildings and their connections to the work of the ethnographic couple Jorge and Margot Dias. We place a special focus on the ethnographic films created by Margot Dias during a number of ethnographic expeditions directed by her husband in the north of Mozambique. These films serve as a symbolic motif for a larger concern, the late arrival and relative fragility of the post-colonial discourse in Portugal and the negation of colonial history. We also question the compromised relationship between science and colonial politics during the Estado Novo period. We practiced reflexivity within the post-colonial discourse by anticipating its loss of potency and its inability to deliver more humanist societies and contemplate the possible demise of the discourse. We identified new turns in the discourse which together outline an emerging field of practice which we refer to as after post-colonialism. We confirm its pertinence for the Portuguese context and highlight the necessity for further strengthening of critical practice. In tune with these conclusions the new sculpture reflects a more incisive and critical visuality.
