Abstract(s)
The process of family reorganization after marital separation and divorce is strongly associated with the quality of the relationship between parents, crucial to continuing to perform parental roles and to the stability of the relationship between parents and children. Psychoeducational programs for separated/divorced parents intend to promote functional interaction patterns among family members and minimize negative effects of the interparental conflict, particularly for children. The main goal of this study is to present comprehensively characteristics, formats and procedures associated with greater effectiveness of psychoeducational programs for separated/divorced parents. It is also explored the perception of separated/divorced Portuguese parents about the relevance of different contents to be addressed in such programs, and their preferences about various elements associated with the organization of the programs. Data were collected through an online questionnaire on a sample of 55 separated/divorced Portuguese parents, with children aged under 18 from previous relationships. Results indicate that all contents are considered relevant by the participants. There are some significant differences between sexes, with women reporting a greater relevance for interpersonal, parenting and interparental issues. Subjects' preferences are for programs of easy access, at an institutional environment, in a mixed group in terms of gender of the participants and together with the other parent. The results are integrated into the review conducted about guidelines for psychoeducational programs for separated/divorced parents and discussed towards best practice recommendations to be addressed in the development and implementation of future programs for Portuguese parents.
