Abstract(s)
The analysis of the morphotypological characteristics of the courthouse and the foundation and application of the idea of Justice in this work focuses on the interpretation and evolution of these typologies associated with the relationship between building and public space, namely through the practical development of a proposal for a new judicial facility in Sines. This conception of a courthouse emphasises the role that transparency can play in the building as a typology, symbol and value that we can identify and recognise in judicial architecture. Transparency is addressed as an architectural issue, related to its other valences, but also as a perceived and qualifying element of the judicial function. Using an analytical methodology that integrates the elaboration of spatial models from the universe of space syntax, a design development and conception strategy was drawn up with a focus on permeability and spatial and urban continuity. The proposed courthouse is part of an urban regeneration programme that will create a new reference area in a municipality that does not have a facility of this nature. The building with centralised judicial uses is made up of 2 main moments of vertical and horizontal relationship of the city and the building. A large basement accommodates complementary services and commercial spaces while promoting a redesign of pedestrian and urban connections at different levels and streets and opening up new spaces for permanence. The suspended building frees up the ground floor, making it transparent in relation to its surroundings and concentrating the functions of the judiciary. The transparency associated with Justice and Architecture is a pressing contemporary issue and can establish the quality and dignity of the Court as a value that citizens recognise. It is important to understand the way or type of transparency and the spaces that best define and represent it. It’s not so much a question of literal transparency, but rather of an empirical or phenomenological perception that makes the object of architecture, in a given place, the Domus Iustitiae.
