Abstract(s)
In the early 2000s the construction of several tourist resorts in Bom Sucesso, an area adjacent to the parish of Vau located in the municipality of Óbidos, caused a radical transformation of the landscape under the promise of regional development. Following European funding and private investment to make the West Region a tourist attraction, resorts were designed with a strategic focus on residential tourism and golf for international promotion. However, the financial environment present at the beginning of the investments changed in 2008 and after a significant expansion of the resorts, drastic consequences arose from the economic crisis, the financial imbalance and the stagnation of the real estate market, where some of these projects were postponed, changed or canceled, emerging in the landscape as a form of territorial (ir)responsibility. The aim of this paper is to analyze, using the contradiction of the place-name in the present state of built of the tourist resorts, the problem of unfinished properties as territorial liabilities left by the global financial crisis on residential tourism and tourism-oriented urbanization, to evaluate if the actors/stakeholders have a common perception and vision of tourism in the western territory, with special focus on Bom Sucesso and to what extent this development is reflected in the improvement of living conditions of the local community and the increase of wealth for the municipality.
