Considering the importance of the study of Emotional Intelligence as a variable that explains many behaviours, it becomes equally important to study the relation each one of its components establishes with one of the most important variables in Human Resources in the current time â burnout â and, especially important to investigate about gender differences in these relations. The goals of this study are: investigate the negative relation all dimensions of Emotional Intelligence have with each one of the burnout dimensions (i.e., exhaustion and cynicism) in a sample of Medicine students; and understand if there are gender differences in this relation. To this end, a questionnaire was applied to a sample of 493 students of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. The results showed a negative relation between the use of emotions (UOE) and exhaustion and cynicism, as well as a gender difference in this relation. One of the most interesting evidences in this study was finding this negative relation in just one of the Emotional Intelligence dimensions, which emphasizes the importance of the balanced use of emotions, thus countering burnout syndrome. Moreover, the results also indicated that the gender differences in this relationship are based on the Emotional Intelligence dimensions that are most significant to relate to burnout, two of which are more explanatory of this variable in men, referring us to the importance of intelligence emotional this sex, and in this specific population.
