A ocupação romana do Monte dos Toirais, Montemor-o-Novo. Um exemplo de arqueologia preventiva no contexto dos finais dos anos 90 (séc. XX)

O sítio arqueológico do Monte dos Toirais localiza-se no concelho de Montemor-o-Novo, na região do Alentejo Central. Identificado em 1996 e intervencionado em 1998, constituiu-se como um dos primeiros testemunhos de uma intervenção em contexto empresarial no âmbito da arqueologia de salvamento, então relacionada com o Plano de Minimização de Impacte Ambiental da A6 – Autoestrada do Alentejo central.
O sítio compreendeu uma primeira ocupação da Idade do Ferro, centrada no século V a.C., e uma segunda ocupação de cronologia romana alto-imperial, objeto da presente comunicação. Volvidos quase 20 anos da intervenção ali realizada, e em paralelo aos estudos em curso sobre a ocupação proto-histórica do local, pretende-se apresentar uma síntese dos testemunhos de época romana identificados no Monte dos Toirais. Partindo de uma abordagem centrada na caracterização das estruturas e nos espólios aí exumados, discutem-se alguns aspetos relacionados com a dinâmica do local no contexto da ocupação rural romana da região a oeste de Ebora Liberalitas Iulia.
The archaelogical site of Monte dos Toirais is located in Montemor-o-Novo, in the central Alentejo region. The site, identified in 1996 and surveyed in 1998, was one of the first cases of a business archaelogical survey in the context of emergency archaeology, then related with the A6 Environmental Impact Study – Central Alentejo freeway. The site uncovered evidence of an Iron Age occupation, dated from the 5th century BC and a roman occupation from imperial age, the latter object of the following paper. Nearly 20 years after its excavation, and following ongoing studies on the proto-historic remains, we present a brief synthesis of the roman testimonies identified in Monte dos Toirais. Through the analysis of the archaeological remains – the preserved structures and artefact assemblages – we discuss certain aspects of the site’s dynamic in the context of the rural roman occupation in western region of Ebora Liberalitas Iulia.
