Abstract(s)
This paper focuses the performance of Portuguese merchandise exports in this period, more precisely from 1999 were channelled to this group of countries in the beginning of the period under scrutiny, the analysis of the performance of those exports to this particular market is particularly relevant. The study is based on a descriptive analysis of the productive structure of merchandise exports to the EU15 and a Constant Market Share (CMS) analysis, which allows to disentangle the export growth into several components, analytically interpretable, including one usually related to competitiveness. The CMS used is the version of Leamer and Stern (1970), which allows to breakdown the variation of exports into several components including the contribution of the specialization pattern and the geographical orientation of trade on the aggregate behaviour of exports, and a residual term usually related to external competitiveness. This version, in turn, is adapted to include the correction proposed by Milana (1988).
