With the increase of life expectancy, there has been an increase of the aging population as well as the neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson´s Disease (PD). This is a reality that´s becoming more frequent in daily clinical practice. The dentist must understand the disease, it´s treatment and the impact on the patient´s ability to maintain proper oral care procedures. Parkinson´s Disease, which is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, affects 1% of the global population. The progressive deterioration of motor and cognitive skills may lead to anxiety, disorientation and to the patient not being able to deal with non-familiar surroundings, such as the dental office and associated treatments. Dentists should implement preventive strategies and oral rehabilitation, as soon as possible, after the diagnosis of PD. The clinician should exercise empathy, patience, congruence and a positive regard to the patient´s and caregivers needs. The aim of this work was to review the existing literature on the topic of PD and it´s influence on the oral health of the elderly, and also to give some guidelines for addressing these patients. To this purpose a literature research was performed using Pubmed.
