Nesta tese, perscrutam-se as consequências da exposição de indivíduos a
experiências-limite, em contexto de guerra ― Guerra Civil de Espanha e Guerra
Colonial Portuguesa ―, e também o modo como a memória dessas vivências surge
narrativizada em romances portugueses e catalães do século XX e do início do
século XXI: La plaça del Diamant, de Mercè Rodoreda, Les veus del Pamano, de
Jaume Cabré, Os Cus de Judas, de António Lobo Antunes, e A Costa dos Murmúrios,
de Lídia Jorge.
Ao longo da análise textual, ir-se-á evidenciando a dificuldade em dar
testemunho da dor, em dizer aquilo que é da ordem do inefável, do incomunicável.
Nos romances do corpus desta tese, escrever funciona como esforço de resistência
ao esquecimento e, ao mesmo tempo, como estratégia de resiliência, porquanto o
sujeito procura construir um sentido para o sucedido, recolectando estilhaços
provocados pelo impacto dos eventos, construindo uma narrativa que deles faça
sentido, que assim permita a reconstrução de si mesmo, que lhe possibilite
sobreviver à catástrofe.
Estas narrativas apresentam algumas características em comum ― tais como
o narrador de 1ª pessoa, a estrutura dialógica, a ordem cronológica (excepto numa
delas, por razões que se assinalam), o estilo sóbrio, a cisão do eu, ou o contraste
entre a duração dos eventos traumáticos e a das suas consequências ―, que
sustentam a sua filiação na literatura de testemunho.
This thesis scrutinizes the consequences of the exposure of individuals to limit experiences, in a war context ― The Spanish Civil War and the Portuguese Colonial War ―, and also the way in which the memory of those experiences appears narrativized in Portuguese and Catalan novels of the 20th and of the beginning of the 21st centuries: La plaça del Diamant (In Diamond Square),1 by Mercè Rodoreda, Les veus del Pamano,2 by Jaume Cabré, Os Cus de Judas (The Land at the End of the World),3 by António Lobo Antunes, and A Costa dos Murmúrios (The Murmuring Coast),4 by Lídia Jorge. Throughout textual analysis, it will be evident the difficulty to bear witness to pain, to say what is ineffable, incommunicable. In these novels, to write represents both an effort to resist forgetfulness and a strategy of resilience, since the subject attempts to make sense of what took place, by recollecting fragments of the impact of the events and building a narrative that can make sense of them, which then allows for the rebuilding of the Self, and thus the catastrophe survival. These narratives share some common features ― such as the 1st person narrator, the dialogic structure, the chronological order (except in one of them, due to reasons that are stressed out in the thesis), the sobriety of the style, the split of the I, or the contrast between the duration of the traumatic events and of its consequences ―, which supports their place within testimony literature.
