«A Western Light in Eastern Lands»: The Study Missions to the Estado da Índia and the Development of an Indo-Lusotropicalist Rhetoric
Publication . Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dos
The aim of this essay is to analyze the goals and achievements of the study missions carried out in the Estado da Índia (State of India) during the 1950s, as well as the ensuing propaganda based on an ideological rhetoric promoting the existence of a kind of Lusotropicalism with an Indo-Portuguese strand, also denominated IndoLusotropicalism. This was crucial to the aspirations of the Estado Novo’s (New State) political propaganda, namely to legitimate Portuguese claims in India, as well as claims to the heritage of Goa, Daman and Diu. In fact, it involved the development of a kind of ‘Indo-Portuguese orientalism’ within Lusotropicalism, clearly differentiated from other forms of Orientalism in other Western countries. An analysis of the works produced by these study missions confirms how the Estado da Índia was intended to be seen by the world according to the Portuguese dictatorial regime: a territory completely different from India and, by contrast, fully integrated into a Lusotropicalist world entirely connected with Portugal yet still maintaining its own specific characteristics. The distinct scopes of the study missions suggest an analysis organized in different sections within this chapter, according to their respective branches of knowledge.
Recensão crítica ao capítulo de livro ‘From an Inventory to a Heritage Information System’ de Vasco Martins Costa In António dos Santos QUEIRÓS (Coord.) Examining A New Paradigm Of Heritage With Philosophy, Economy And Education Hershey, Pa (Usa): Igi Global, 2020
Publication .
Art (Portugal)
Publication . Lapa, Pedro
The Great War coincided with a period of great changes and conceptions as regards artistic trends. The official nomination of painter Sousa Lopes to represent Portugal in the global conflict followed the precepts of traditional history painting; however, the results reveal a limit to its realization. In turn, modernist artists distanced themselves from the war – only soldier Christiano Cruz would produce non-state-commissioned paintings from a modernist perspective that allowed a reflection on modern art and war. Whose heritage?: classification of national monuments in the former Portuguese Estado da Índia during the colonial period, and its post-colonial decolonisation
Publication . Santos, Joaquim Rodrigues dos
The study explores the process of studying and preserving the architectural heritage of the Portuguese Estado da Índia, examining the classification of the national monuments in Goa, Daman and Diu. This process occurred later than similar initiatives in the British Raj and Portugal, and it reflects various political, cultural, and historical factors. The essay investigates, for the first time and in a wide range, the reasons for the survey, study and listing of monuments in these territories by the Portuguese colonial regime, their effective applicability, and the post-colonial decolonisation of the existing heritage legislation. By analysing official bulletins, reports, newspaper articles, historical photographs, and conducting personal interviews, this article provides a comprehensive examination of the patrimonialisation process in the former Estado da Índia, shedding light on the listing of national monuments in 1932 and its ongoing consequences, namely its impact on the relationship between the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and the Archaeological Survey of India in the post-colonial era.
Um novo retrato do Padre António Vieira
Publication .
[Apoio FCT (ref.UIDB/04189/2020)]
