The impact of sexual orientation microaggressions on the mental health of Brazilian lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals
Publication . Silva, W. A. D.; Do Bú, Emerson Araújo; Brito, Tátila Rayane de Sampaio; de Figueiredo, Camilla Vieira; Pereira, Cicero Roberto
Despite advancements in lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB+) rights and visibility, there remains a significant
gap in understanding the nuanced experiences of subtle discrimination faced by sexual minorities in Brazil,
particularly regarding the impact on their mental health. This research examines the role of sexual orientation
microaggressions in shaping mental health outcomes among Brazilian LGB+ individuals. Specifically, we
investigate the association between experiences of microaggressions and depression, anxiety, and stress
symptoms within this community. Throughout four studies (N = 678), we examined the association between
sexual orientation microaggressions and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms in Brazilian LGB+ individuals by first ensuring the content, factorial, convergent-discriminant validity, and internal consistency of
the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Sexual Orientation Microaggressions Scale (SOMS-br). The findings
show that experiences of microaggressions based on sexual orientation were associated with decreased mental health in Brazilian LGB+ individuals. Moreover, the adapted items of the SOMS-br were psychometrically suitable to assess individual differences in microaggressions experienced by the Brazilian LGB+ community. Taken together, these results emphasize the psychometric validity of SOMS in measuring
microaggressions in the Brazilian context. Furthermore, we provide the first evidence that sexual microaggressions impact mental health indicators in the Brazilian LGB+ community. Theoretical and practical
implications of the literature are both discussed.
Developing and validating a measure of attitudes towards Support for Inclusive Policies (SSIP) for people with visual impairments
Publication . dos Santos, Francisca Ádila; Do Bú, Emerson Araújo; Silva, W. A. D.; Pereira, Cicero Roberto
The longstanding social disadvantages experienced by individuals with disabilities have garnered considerable attention from the scientific community and social movements worldwide. The political mobilization in defense of the rights of this minority group underscores the importance of understanding societal attitudes towards their inclusion. Our research aims to delve into Brazilian societal attitudes regarding the inclusion of people with visual impairments in various sectors of society. To achieve this objective, we developed a research program composed of four studies dedicated to validating the Scale of Support for Inclusive Policies (SSIP). Specifically, in Study 1 (N=37), we developed the SSIP items and assessed their content validity. In Studies 2 (N=176) and 3 (N=116), exploratory and confirmatory factor analysesprovided indications of the factorial validity and reliability of the scores obtained with the SSIP. Finally, Study 4 (N=234) gathered evidence for the convergent and discriminant validity of the SSIP. Moreover, multigroup factor analysis was undertaken in Study 4, providing evidence of the instrument’s configural, metric, and scalar invariance to measure the expression of support for inclusive policies towards people with visual impairments for men and women. Overall, the results strongly suggest that the SSIP is an effective and innovative tool for gauging individual differences in endorsing inclusive public policies, particularly for those with visual impairments. This instrument is anticipated to deepen our comprehension of how support for inclusive policies varies among individuals, thereby expanding research into attitudes towards disabilities broadly, beyond visual impairment
Contextualizing the manifestation of gendered colonialist microaggressions: a qualitative study on post-colonial migration experiences among immigrant women
Publication . Piccinelli, Elena; Vauclair, Christin-Melanie; Madeira, Filipa
Over the last decade, the framework of microaggressions has been adopted to examine subtle manifestations of discrimination from the perspective of socially disadvantaged groups. However, the microaggressions literature is strongly U.S.-centered, and very few studies have been conducted in other societal contexts, such as European countries characterized by distinct migration patterns and post-colonial intergroup relations. Moreover, foreign-born immigrant women have been overlooked in microaggression research. The present qualitative study draws upon post-colonial feminist theory and adopts an intracategorical intersectional approach to examine the experiences of foreign-born immigrant women in Portugal. Ten focus groups were conducted with 52 participants (Mage=34.2, SD = 10.2). Data were analyzed via a two-step process thematic analysis (TA) approach. First, codebook TA was used to produce nine themes building on previous microaggressions taxonomies. Then, reflexive TA was applied to generate four macro-themes related to post-colonial discourses. As a result, we propose a taxonomy of Gendered Colonialist Microaggressions and a theoretical framework linking these subtle forms of discrimination to social representations of immigrant women, rooted in colonial legacies and systemic power disparities. This study highlights the understudied psychological and societal implications of microaggressions in post-colonial settings, raising new questions and providing directions for future action.
