Mobility, family, and gender: a transnational approach

A mobilidade em espaços transnacionais modifica as relações entre indivíduos e dentro da família, tanto nos países de origem como nos países de imigração. Os impactos de género no comportamento dos indivíduos determinam os efeitos de longo prazo que a migração traz nas suas vidas. Neste artigo, após a apresentação dos fundamentos teóricos do grupo de investigação "vidas transnacionais, mobilidade e género" (TLM & G)1, vou discutir as implicações epistemológicas e as escolhas envolvidas nos métodos de recolha de dados nos estudos da mobilidade transnacional. Concluo apontando para a necessidade de repensar a mobilidade e os estudos da família, numa perspectiva transnacional que considere o género dos indivíduos, através da adaptação dos instrumentos metodológicos à realidade da mobilidade humana contemporânea. O objetivo geral do grupo de investigação TLM & G é explorar o impacto da mobilidade na vida dos indivíduos, considerando as relações familiares e domésticas, e tendo em conta a forma como as experiências de integração são afectadas pelas representações de género e pela sua auto-percepção. Do ponto de vista académico, este grupo de investigação irá reforçar a abordagem sociológica e a formação científica nesta área quer nos países europeus quer nos países africanos, com um impacto potencial sobre o transnacionalismo, a migração e os estudos da família. Olhando para a mobilidade como um direito humano e uma oportunidades para os indivíduos e as famílias, o objetivo é contribuir para uma abordagem teórica renovada sobre as condições diferenciadas do acesso à migração na sociedade de origem, bem como no espaço diferenciado de integração social na sociedade de imigração.

Transnational families are not a new phenomenon. Research on
transnational family lives led to a growing body of empirical studies and literature.
Globalization and Information and Communications
Technology (ICT) have created conditions that help families survive the
geographical distance, staying connected. This is focused mainly on the
impacts of transnational way of life in migrant mothers and their
interaction with those left behind, while fathering practices during
migration have received less attention. Despite the efforts made by parents
to ease the geographical separation, often there are changes in the
relationship between parents and children, such as the loss of parental
authority or the weakening of emotional bonds.
The aim of this chapter is to analyze how the relationship between
parents and children is affected by the migratory project, and also identify what practices are carried out by migrant parents to exercise parenting at
distance.
Day to Day Life of Transnational Couples

In this chapter we focus on the ways that transnational spatial mobility
affects the production and reproduction of daily life of couples when one
of the partners migrates alone. The aim is to examine the impact of male
migration on day to day life of couples in which the partners are
geographically separated across nation-state borders. V/e will adopt a
transnational approach in order to recognize the importance of the
connections between migrants and their family members back home.
Living apart together poses new challenges to partnerships in their
everyday lives and requires a process of negotiation with the ones that stay
behind (Levin and Trost 1999,2004;Pribilsky 2004; Grassi 2014,2015).
Illegalization and Social Inequality in the Regulation of Marriage and Migration Control in Portugal

Based on a case study on the institutional regulation of conjugality and
migration in Portugal, this contribution feeds into the debate regarding the
construction of illegality in the context of international mobility.
Observing the specific institutional processes related to family-related
migration allows us to observe for instance, the construction of a space of
control and criminalization. This focus on "illegality" stems from an
interest in the mechanisms through which determined practices of
individuals engaging in transnational mobility are being institutionally
framed as problematic, and legally sanctioned as such.
