Circunscrever a fome: notas sobre uma socialidade da escassez no Sul de Angola

Neste capítulo discuto o percurso atribulado da etnografia para balizar
a compreensão da ondjala, da fome como idioma social, vigente ainda
hoje no contexto rural do Sul de Angola, extensa região multi-étnica
de maioria Bantu. Esboço uma historiografia de abordagens etnográficas
que explique ressonâncias e dissonâncias, para delinear o que
chamo de uma socialidade da escassez de uma perspetiva regional,
através da crescente interligação entre história e ecologia. A apreensão
progressiva das relações entre modos de produção e ecologia num
tempo longo nesta região geográfica e humanamente diversa oferece
uma lição de história da etnografia e de interdisciplinaridade para a
compreensão de fenómenos temporais díspares que têm regulado muitas
das vivências das comunidades rurais.
Screenings from the archive: Nelisita (1982), an African vernacular‐language fiction set in rural southern Angola and its illuminating cinematic chain

Nelisita (Carvalho, 1982, Nelisita: narrativas nianeka), a pioneering African vernacular language fiction film from the early phase of Angolan cinema, inspired me to conduct a
series of interconnected exercises in visual anthropology. I produced an experimental
archive-based remake (Ponte, 2016, 127 stills or 34 scenes from Nelisita) and screened
it in both transnational urban contexts and an Angolan rural context reminiscent of
the film's setting. This article discusses the multi-sited chain of production and recep tion of this short archival remake and various localized contemporary responses to
it. The article examines an evolving concern with the materiality of the archive and
how both foreign urban and familiar rural audiences received the film's narrative and
change of genre.
An Angolan vernacular-language fiction film as para-ethnographic film: Nationalism and the evolving politics of film circulation and reception

This article examines Nelisita (Carvalho, 1982), an Olunyaneka-language feature fiction film made in the early years of Angolan cinema, and draws a historiography of its marginal production and ensuing scattered reception. Combining a historical approach to the film’s production and circulation, with an ethnographically-driven analysis of its recent screenings at a village sharing an Olunyaneka background, I discuss insights gained from its reception by an audience familiar with the cultural context portrayed on screen. Along with the history of the film’s production and circulation, the villagers’ engagement with the film sheds light on the evolving politics of cinema in Africa, particularly the complex relationships between popular and film festival audiences, film studies and visual anthropology. I examine shifting continuities and ruptures with regards to the film’s intricate social history, and analyse the production and reception of Nelisita as an experiment that highlights differing ways in which films can work as a contact zone.
