The objective of this study was to analyze the quality of life of Portuguese adolescents and to verity the impact of having a chronic health condition, namely with impact on the participation on school, family and social life (peers and leisure). A total of 8215 Portuguese adolescents (53.9% girls) attending the 8th, 10th and 12th grades in Portugal were included in the Health Behavior in School aged Children (HBSC) study. Adolescents were asked about their quality of life and aspects related to the existence of physical and psychological symptoms, as well as if the chronic health condition has impact on the participation on school, family and social life (peers and leisure). Adolescents with chronic health conditions present significantly more physical and psychological symptoms and less perceived quality of life. Controlling gender and age, the existence of physical or psychological symptoms has a negative impact on the perception of quality of life. This relationship is stronger when adolescents report having a chronic health condition with an impact on participation and attendance at school, in the family or at leisure. The difficulty of participation in the family is the one that adds more explanatory value. These results suggest that, in relation to adolescents with chronic health conditions, intervention efforts should focus on ensuring their social and affective participation in the family, school and at leisure with the peer group.

Publication . Tomé, Gina; Gaspar, Tania; Branquinho, Cátia Sofia dos Santos; Oliveira, Maria Leticia Marcondes Coelho de; Matos, Margarida Gaspar de
The aim of this study was to analyse the social alienation impact on the feelings of belonging to a group, friends’ relationships and wellbeing of Portuguese adolescents. Methods: A total of 5695 Portuguese adolescents with a mean age of 15.46 (SD=1.80), attending the 8th, 10th and 12th years of schooling in mainland Portugal were included in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Two models of path analysis were executed, one for the more resilient group of adolescents and one for the less resilient group, where it was found that the negative impact of social alienation on adolescents’ wellbeing was greater in the less resilient group. The friend’s relationship appears associated with less social alienation, as well as the feelings of belonging to a group, in both groups of resilience, nevertheless in the less resilient group the impact of the feelings of belonging reduces while the impact of the relation with the friends increases. The negative impact of social alienation on the wellbeing of adolescents is evident and it is essential to promote skills that prevent these consequences and promote the well-being of adolescents. Resilience emerges as a protective factor for the negative consequences of social alienation. Presented results strengthen the need to implement among adolescents’ programs that promote their personal and social skills with emphasis on resilience.

Publication . Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Gaspar, Tania; Tomé, Gina; Cerqueira, Ana; Matos, Margarida Gaspar de
Understanding the equal opportunities of immigrants as one of the fundamental humanity rights, migrant populations have been especially prominent, being present in various social and political discussions. The objective of the study was to analyse the characteristics of adolescents who express a more positive attitude towards cultural diversity. A total of 5695 Portuguese adolescents (46.1% boys) participated in the study, from the 8th, 10th and 12th grades, in Portugal. The sample was collected as part of the Health Behaviour in School aged Children (HBSC) study. Gender differences have been identified, being females and adolescents who meet non-Portuguese youth who have a more positive connection with equal opportunities for immigrants. Age and curiosity about meeting people from other places also have an explanatory value of equal opportunities. The variables related to cultural diversity and well-being help to better explain the perception of the equality of opportunities of migrants in the eyes of Portuguese adolescents, however it is the youngest and the women who present a more positive perception. Development of actions to encourage the valorisation of diversity and the promotion of common activities is necessary, emphasizing the promotion of other personal and/or social-emotional competences in promoting well-being and social cohesion.

Publication . Camacho, Inês; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Tomé, Gina; Matos, Margarida Gaspar de
This study aimed to study social support among family members, and the effects of parental custody in communication with parents and in the family relationship. A total of 8125 Portuguese adolescents participated in the study, with 52,7% being female, attending the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grade in Portugal, as part of the Health Behaviour in School aged Children (HBSC) . The young people were asked if their parents lived in the same house, and if they did not live how was the parental guard. They were also questioned about the level of life satisfaction, family support, satisfaction with the family relationship and the ease of communicating with mother and father. The results indicate that the adolescents living in the shared custody system report having a better relationship with the family and reported being able to communicate with the father more easily. Considering that the number of divorces has increased, there are still very few young people who report living in the shared custody system, where there is greater contact with both parents, most of whom report that they live with one of the parents and rarely or never sees the other parent. More studies on this topic should be developed to understand which parental custody, after separation, has a better impact on the life of adolescents in a situation that in itself can create stress in adolescents
Os adolescentes portugueses, a internet e as dependências tecnológicas
Publication . Matos, Margarida Gaspar de; Gaspar, Tania; Guedes, Fábio Botelho; Tomé, Gina; Branquinho, Cátia Sofia dos Santos
This work aims to analyze the use of the internet by young people: contact with others online, online intimacy relationships, dependence on social networks, screen time and social conflicts caused by excessive online time, identifying relationships, comparing genders and school grade (age proxy) and identifying regional situations and needs. A total of 8215 Portuguese adolescents (52.7% females) attending the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades in mainland Portugal were enrolled in the study of Health Behaviour in School aged Children (HBSC). Gender, grade and Regions’ differences were identified. The female gender uses more of the new technologies to get in touch and to create social networks. The male gender is more likely to create conflicts associated with the use of technologies. In the dimensions considered the youngest tend to use the internet and the social networks more frequently than the older ones. It is noted that in several of the measures the region Centro, compared to the Alentejo region, seems to have a more moderate use. The internet brings with it numerous advantages that one must know how to take advantage, avoiding unsafe or abusive uses or even the development of dependencies. The development of socio-emotional skills, self-regulation, and interpersonal relationships and social support, the search for alternatives to leisure and socialization without being via the Internet, are factors linked to the protection of the quality of life, well-being and mental health of adolescents.
