East Asian lacquers are the saps of the species Rhus vernicifera, Rhus succedanea and Melanorrhoea usitate, obtained through an incision in the trunk of the tree. Lacquers have been applied as protective and decorative coatings in the most varied kinds of objects, for thousands of years. Lacquered objects are rare and highly valued artefacts that evidence, in part, the cultural exchange between Europe and Asia, initiated with the Portuguese maritime expansion. This cultural exchange has promoted the emergence of new artistic styles, which combine many decorative influences that complicate the attribution of the provenance of many lacquered artefacts. As lacquer producing species are distributed by relatively well defined regions, the identification of the lacquer applied in a given object can contribute to the determination of its origin. In this work, Py-GC/MS methods that allow discriminating between the three types of oriental lacquers were developed, and the polymerization process of lacquers was characterized by μ-FTIR and Py-GC/MS. These methods allowed the identification of a tree from Tapada da Ajuda’s Botanical Park, through the analysis of its dried sap, as belonging to Rhus vernicifera species, as well as to study the origins and techniques of a set of luso-oriental objects of unknown origin, and two regions for the provenance of these artefacts were recognized
