The early theatre photography in Portugal – Some reflections
This paper reflects on the practice of theatre photography in Portugal in
the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and tries
to achieve an ontological definition of theatre photography based on its
diversity: theatre venues, stage photography and actor portraits. It goes
further especially in the actor portraits category that reveals how
photography is a well-skilled medium to convene a broad range of concepts
and meanings and contribute to identify the theatre specificity and its
history.
