“A short story that wouldn’t work after the opening lines” : Frustrated Maternity in First-Person Narratives

I propose to offer an analysis of two first-person narratives, one fictional— “Jackson Pollock’s Curtains” by Sue Hubbard (in her 2008 volume, Rothko’s Red)—and the other, a memoir by Hilary Mantel, Giving Up the Ghost(2003), in order to explore two contrasting ways of dealing with situations of frustrated maternity. The differences will be illustrated by looking at the formal characteristics of the two texts, by references to painting, especially in the case of Hubbard’s short story, and by relating them to two of the types of narratives of illness as proposed by Arthur W. Frank in his The Wounded Storyteller (1995), namely: “chaos narrative” and “quest narrative.”

Free Associative Film Analysis

Can people’s lives be enhanced through personal reflective contact with the arts? Results obtained from social intervention programs using the arts, including music (Tunstall 2012) and literature (Trounstine & Waxler 2008) indicate this is the case. In Meeting Movies (2006) Norman Holland demonstrates a reflective method of film analysis – free associative film analysis. In this essay, I will present my adaptation of this method, the results I obtained from individual free associative film analysis and its application in the classroom. I will examine the outcomes obtained in light of proposals made by philosopher Miranda Fricker on epistemic injustice (2007), and Byung-Chul Han on the social and neural roots of neurological illness such as depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), borderline personality disorder (BDO) and burnout syndrome today (2010). Based on these reflections, I will suggest that perhaps there has never been a greater need to study the arts.

Contar (com) a Medicina

Contar (com) a Medicina reúne um conjunto de sessenta excertos, maioritariamente ficcionais, traduzidos do Alemão, Francês e Inglês, mas também do Castelhano e Sueco, incidindo sobre autores do século XX, e relacionados com a medicina. Os textos são precedidos por uma nota introdutória que oferece o respetivo enquadramento. A antologia organiza-se em três secções intituladas "Doentes", "Cuidadores" e "Família", de acordo com a perspetiva de quem vive, e de quem descreve ou de quem reflete sobre a doença e a saúde, a perceção do corpo, a palavra e o silêncio, a relação médico/doente, o saber científico e o contato humano, na interface da técnica com a ética. Os temas aqui abordados são tão variados quanta a diversidade de autores e textos reunidos.

Leituras holísticas : de Tchékhov à Medicina Narrativa

Neste artigo, procura-se evidenciar como, no conto “Um caso da prática médica”, o escritor russo, Anton Tchékhov, ele próprio médico, ficcionaliza e chama a atenção para aspetos da prática clínica hoje tantas vezes descurados, designadamente a observação e avaliação do ambiente em que vivem os doentes; e aspetos de índole familiar, social e até sexual, bem como a importância crucial da relação interpessoal de carácter dialógico entre médico e doente. Relacionar-se-á esta chamada de atenção indireta de Tchékhov com a situação atual no domínio da prática clínica, recorrendo-se ao conceito de Medicina Baseada na Prova (EBM), como paradigma atualmente dominante nas práticas médicas, e à necessidade de o complementar com o da Medicina Baseada na Narrativa (NBM) ou Medicina Narrativa.
