Christians and muslims in the western Maghrib : defining a zonal frontier (AH 818/CE 1415 – AH 928/CE 1521)
Publication . Ramos, Gonçalo M.; Fernandes, Hermenegildo Nuno Goinhas
This thesis aims at considering the establishment of Portuguese coastal outposts and their surroundings in Western Maghrib as a quintessential frontier society, forged between Christians and Muslims, in the 818/1415 – 928/1521 timeframe. To do so, it will anchor itself in three major assertions: firstly, it intends to further the historical uniqueness of this period, by removing any pre-conceived notion regarding its ulterior colonial ramifications: it will deliberately downplay its symbolical status as the beginning of European overseas’ expansion, as well as of the first colonial(ist) European settlement in what would come to be known as the Kingdom of Morocco; secondly, in tandem with the previous assertion, it will reinforce its medieval roots, by linking them with the political and military strategies employed by the emerging A.H. fifth-sixth-/C.E. twelfth- and A.H. sixth-seventh-/C.E. thirteenth-centuries Iberian Christian kingdoms in regards to Islam and, more particularly, by stressing the historical affinities each side of the Straits of Gibraltar displayed, thus performing what has already been termed “spanning the Strait”; thirdly, without ever disregarding the historical circumstances inherent to any given situation, it will methodologically emphasize the “Christian” and “Muslim” nature of the agents in question, rather than their apparent “national” origin, such as “Portuguese” or “Marīnid”. The thesis is thus divided in two great sections: the first one shall deal with the territorial and sociological dimensions of the frontier: it will be subdivided into the study of the Northern sub-frontier, centred around the cities of Ceuta – al-Qaṣr al-Ṣaghīr – Tangier – Asīlah, and the Southern sub-frontier, based upon the cities of Safī – Azammūr – el-Jadīda – Agadir. Stemming from a thorough analysis of the notion “outer field”, a certain Christian-controlled spatial occupation matrix shall be outlined, which, in turn, shall be doubly related with everyday operations in a militarised setting, such as the ransom of captives, the almogavarias, amongst others, as well as with certain specific events of this history, such as the failed Graciosa attempt and the Muslim victory of al- Maʿmūra. This will also help to further inspect trivialised notions, such that of “protectorate” and “peace moors”. The second one shall deepen the notion of hybridisation, by confronting the doctrinal debates within Christian and Muslim sources with a religious conversions-, volatile loyalties- and mutual acculturation-filled quotidian.
To enrich the comprehension of this historiographical cause célèbre by establishing the analytical relevance of a frontier mind-set will be the ultimate objective of this work.
