Sousa, Ana Alexandra Alves deWe intend to see if concepts such as alke, sthenos, kratos, menos, bie and tharsos still characterize the hero of the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes. lhe Iliadic heroes need them all to fight, and Odysseus to restore order and overcome several obstacles. As we shall sce those concepts are still present in the Hellenistic epic, but with a new meaning. Therefore, Apollonius uses some concepts essential to characterize the Homeric heroes to show that in this new era determination and ability to strategize are the best means to achicve goals.

Sousa, Ana Alexandra Alves deEsta palestra examina as razões que levaram Apolónio de Rodes a modificar a tradição ao caracterizar Fineu na Argonáutica como um filantropo tão dedicado à humanidade que se coloca em risco Em vez de ser um ancião calculista e impiedoso, Fineu quer aliviar o sofrimento da humanidade, e, por sua vez, aceita resignado o seu castigo e mantem-se temente aos deuses. A sua atitude paciente e a sua confiança no divino evocam algumas figuras bíblicas, como Finéias, o sacerdote Heli e Job. Esta mudança cultural na epopeia helenística segue o espírito do próprio Alexandre o Grande, que tentou implementar uma administração mista e fundir as aristocracias persa e macedónia. Os famosos casamentos de Susa, em 324 a.C., deveriam marcar o início de uma era cosmopolita, que nunca passou de um sonho. Embora os desafios enfrentados pelos heróis na Argonáutica de Apolônio de Rodes ilustrem a hostilidade tradicional do mundo desconhecido (Âmico, o rei pugilista, Eetes, o soberano inóspito, as rochas Ciâneas, a passagem marítima mortal), a reverência aos deuses e a solidariedade também estão presentes no itinerário do novo herói.

Sousa, Ana Alexandra Alves deThis translation fills a serious lack in the literary panorama and has the particularity of allowing the reader to identify lines of reading. In fact, the poet builds with Argonautica’s lemmas, almost as many as those of Odyssey, meanings that easily go unnoticed by the current reader, secluded from the original by the linguistic barrier. This translation is the first one done with the concern of keeping the lemmas recognizable. We want the contemporary reader to identify, as the Alexandrian reader, the parallels with other episodes within the poem, the subtle evocations of characters and moments. In the notes we clarify the most difficult passages and we also identify some of the work done with the sources, especially the Homeric. In the introduction we integrate the poet in his time and we analyse the invocation and the ecphrasis of Jason’s mantle. All the places on the outward journey also deserve comment, since from them there are several paths leading to the story, to Alexandrian literary aesthetics and to the History itself.
