- Community-based intervention in schools : a personal and social competence promotion programPublication . Matos, M. G.; Branco, J.; Sousa, A.; Carvalhosa, S.; Carvalhosa, J.Primary prevention, through universal interventions, aims at the development of personal and social resources, and nowadays, it is one of the most important strategies for the prevention of drugs abuse in youth. School setting is pointed out as one of the best scenarios for health promotion actions. In this article are shown results of a Personal and Social Competences Promotion Program - PSCPP [1] [2] which took place in two schools in Lisbon. The program aims to prevent substance use, by means of developing personal and social competences. 100 students, aged between eight and eleven years, participated, mostly boys. The intervention occurred during school classes and was based on role-playing activities. Evaluation showed significant positive results in what concerns psychological difficulties, perception of social support, and problem solving competences. Teachers’ evaluation pointed out a better social behaviour among peers, as well as the importance of implementing programs promoting personal and social competences in schools. PSCPP had a positive impact on children positive health. Details of this project can be found in a manual [3].
- Promoting personal and social competence with the elderly : a community-based programPublication . Matos, M. G.; Branco, J.; Silva, M.; Carvalhosa, S.; Carvalhosa, J.The purpose of the present work is to describe and present the final results of a Personal and Social Competence Promotion Program – PSCPP [1] [2] carried out in the community with a group of older people (> 55 years) living in Lisbon. This project [4] was born from a partnership between Junta de Freguesia de Santa Maria de Belém and the Social Adventure’s team of the Faculty of Human Kinetics. The mentioned project took place from November 2003 until July of 2005, and included both regular and extra sessions. The “Peer” Project aimed at promoting healthy life styles; developing interpersonal skills, collaboration and support competences among the seniors; as well as adaptation to aging and development of behaviors related to positive health. In the first year, a group of elderly volunteered to participate in the sessions carried out by the technician and, in the second year, some elements of this group leaded the session for other new-comers.

Batalha, Ana Paula Paiva Barata de AlmeidaIn a permanent dance education perspective, the Dance for everybody is considered an activity with a huge educational value, which may have an important role in the community contributing for help children development, young people,s life styles patterns, and to promote active adults. The wellbeing and quality of life of the people in the community, while being a free time practice and it is a full potential to promote a good life styles patterns, and to control their lives and health. It’s getting more and more important to invest in the people active life providing them significant, healthy, accessible, motivating and recreate activities in which the Dance for everybody. Studies have demonstrated the benefits of this kind of activity for the people in a physical, cognitive, psychological and social way. After our experience and analysing the Dance for all, we understand the advantages and benefits in an educational, communicative, motor, artistic, expressive and cultural way. It turned out to be possible to develop Dance programmes for every body in the community in various institutions such as schools, studios, academies, town halls, recreate associations, among others. These programmes can be developed with different objectives, with different people of different ages, using adequate, enjoyable and positive methodologies and strategies in order to improve the quality of life, promote a positive health, and increase active lifestyle of a different group with a different age.
