  • The idiosyncratic nature of maritime clusters : considerations for their possible differentiation
Publication . Monteiro, Pedro Valadas; Noronha, Teresa de; Neto, Paulo
The main objective of the current paper is to distinguish the most relevant aspects which can or should be observed in maritime clusters and are most likely to contribute to their inherent idiosyncratic nature. Based on a literature survey and on a benchmarking presentation of four successful examples of European maritime clusters, we use a study research methodology to substantiate the proposal of a possible differentiation framework for these types of clusters. Our purpose is to point out some of the main characteristics and critical factors for success that are inherent to maritime clusters. Although rarely addressed among the various authors considered in the literature review, our intention is to find out what distinctive competitiveness factors should be considered in a targeted multi-sectorial cluster approach to the economy of the sea, i.e. those that are likely to influence the creation, sustainable development and resilience of successful maritime clusters
  • Relationship among emotional intelligence, deviant workplace behavior and job performance : an empirical study
Publication . Rahman, Sahidur; Ferdausy, Shameema; Karan, Rana
The purpose of the study is to examine the relationships among emotional intelligence, deviant work- place behavior, and job performance. Emotional intelligence and deviant workplace behavior was measured by the Emotional Quotient Index and Multidimensional Scale respectively while job performance was assessed by Tsui et al.,’s Job Performance Scale. Data for this study were collected from 201 employed MBA students studying at four private universities in Chittagong, a port city of Bangladesh. They were asked to rate their supervisors’ emotional intelligence, deviant workplace behavior, and job performance with the help of self administered questionnaires. In data collection, this study used convenience sampling. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation, and regression analysis. Results indicated a negative correlation between emotional intelligence and deviant workplace behavior (r = -.52**), and deviant workplace behavior and job performance (r = -.45**) while emotional intelligence was found to correlate positively with job performance (r = .58**). The main implication of the study is that emotionally intelligent employees exhibit higher job performance and a lesser tendency to take part in deviant workplace behavior. The other implication is that the presence of deviant workplace behavior was a prior indication of poor job performance; hence supervisors should use their emotional intelligence competencies to improve their own and others’ job performance. The most important limitation of the study was that it used convenience samples, which might limit the generalizability of the results. Future research directions are also discussed.
  • Hedging the longevity risk for the portuguese population in the bond market
Publication . Carlos, Rúben Pereira; Simões, Onofre Alves
Increases in life expectancy have been noticeable in recent decades and this is one of the key issues to the annuities industry and to the public pensions system. To address the problem of hedging the longevity risk, several instruments have been discussed within the financial markets in order to find a solution. Many stochastic models have been suggested to fit the evolution of the mortality curve as close as possible, so that these financial instruments can be issued on a solid basis. In this paper, we discuss and simulate the issue of two longevity bonds with cash flows linked to the evolution of a survival index, built on the Portuguese mortality data. The forecast of mortality rates is per- formed using a two-factor stochastic model, the Cairns-Blake-Dowd (CBD) model. The main objective is to develop a hedging solution to the increases in human longevity in Portugal.
  • Revisiting the applicability of porter’s model to the portuguese manufacturing : a departure from traditional strategies
Publication . Lisboa, João Veríssimo; Augusto, Mário Gomes; Yasin, Mahmoud M.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategies utilized in the Portuguese manufacturing environment, and to compare the results with those of a similar study conducted in 1993. Self-administered surveys were employed and a total sample of 229 firms were used for the analysis. The responses were factor analyzed to establish patterns of strategic behaviours. In comparison with 1993, today’s Portuguese manufacturing firms are using more product development and innovation in order to offer many new customized products to different markets. In most cases, they are capitalizing on flexible manufacturing to achieve more depth and breadth in their product lines.
