Qualquer país, cidade, freguesia ou sítio necessita de uma representação gráfica que lhe proporcione visibilidade, de modo a estimular o sentimento de pertença dos seus habitantes, ao mesmo tempo que a projecta visualmente a nível internacional. Essa necessidade é tanto mais importante e sensível, quanto muitas das nossas cidades (e lugares) vivem das capacidades produtivas relacionadas com o turismo. De forma a consubstanciar uma representação gráfica representativa de uma localidade, é imprescindível compreender a identidade do sítio, efectuar um levantamento do património material e imaterial, i.e., o património construído, as pré-existências e as tradições da cultura do lugar na sua relação com o tecido sócio-urbano. Como caso de estudo para a construção de um modelo a ser aplicado na criação de signos gráficos representantes dos sítios, analisas e uma das mais emblemáticas freguesias da cidade de Lisboa: Alcântara. Trata-se também de uma das mais antigas da capital, caracterizada por um vasto património histórico onde ainda se identificam vestígios dos seus legados religioso, aristocrático e industrial. Analisa-se a história desta freguesia, o seu património material e imaterial, para melhor compreender a sua identidade e diversidade sócio urbana que, aliás, reflecte em grande medida a pluralidade da própria cidade capital. Para a construção do modelo que se propõe, utilizou-se uma metodologia mista de base não intervencionista, através da aplicação de questionários dirigidos a residentes e turistas, recorrendo ainda a X entrevistas a um painel de especialistas na área do design gráfico. Os dados recolhidos permitiram compreender melhor a problemática, aferindo uma série de aspetos essenciais e, a partir das variáveis e invariáveis identificadas, desenvolver a proposta de um modelo que se intenta apresentar nas suas linhas mestras. Aferiram-se os elementos visuais a serem ponderados numa representação simbólica para as regiões administrativas com vista à delimitação dos critérios que estarão em condições de orientar os designers na sua tarefa de proceder a uma representação gráfica de Alcântara que, inclusivamente, se mostre apta a dialogar com a identidade própria da capital.

- Genetic diversity and host alternation of the egg parasitoid Oencyrtus pityocampae between the pine processionary moth and caper bugPublication . Samra, Shahar; Ghanim, Murad; Protasov, Alex; Branco, Manuela; Mendel, ZviThe increased use of molecular tools for species identification in recent decades revealed that each of many apparently generalist parasitoids are actually a complex of morphologically similar congeners, most of which have a rather narrow host range. Ooencyrtus pityocampae (OP), an important egg parasitoid of the pine processionary moth (PPM), is considered a generalist parasitoid. OP emerges from PPM eggs after winter hibernation, mainly in spring and early summer, long before the eggs of the next PPM generation occurs. The occurrence of OP in eggs of the variegated caper bug (CB) Stenozygum coloratum in spring and summer suggests that OP populations alternate seasonally between PPM and CB. However, the identity of OP population on CB eggs seemed uncertain; unlike OP-PPM populations, the former displayed apparently high male/female ratios and lack of attraction to the PPM sex pheromone. We studied the molecular identities of the two populations since the morphological identification of the genus Ooencyrtus, and OP in particular, is difficult. Sequencing of COI and ITS2 DNA fragments and AFLP analysis of individuals from both hosts revealed no apparent differences between the OP-PPM and the OP-CB populations for both the Israeli and the Turkish OPs, which therefore supported the possibility of host alternation. Sequencing data extended our knowledge of the genetic structure of OP populations in the Mediterranean area, and revealed clear separation between East and West Mediterranean populations. The overall level of genetic diversity was rather small, with the Israeli population much less diverse than all others; possible explanations for this finding are discussed. The findings support the possibility of utilizing the CB and other hosts for enhancing biological control of the PPM
- Exopolysaccharides enriched in rare suggars: bacterial sources, production and applicationsPublication . Roca, Christophe; Alves, Vitor D.; Freitas, Filomena; Reis, Maria A.M.Microbial extracellular polysaccharides (EPS), produced by a wide range of bacteria, are high molecular weight biopolymers, presenting an extreme diversity in terms of chemical structure and composition. They may be used in many applications, depending on their chemical and physical properties. A rather unexplored aspect is the presence of rare sugars in the composition of some EPS. Rare sugars, such as rhamnose or fucose, may provide EPS with additional biological properties compared to those composed of more common sugar monomers. This review gives a brief overview of these specific EPS and their producing bacteria. Cultivation conditions are summarized, demonstrating their impact on the EPS composition, together with downstream processing. Finally, their use in different areas, including cosmetics, food products, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical applications, are discussed

- A nontoxic polypeptide oligomer with a fungicide potency under agricultural conditions which is equal or greater than that of their chemical counterpartsPublication . Tens of them have had attempted protection by patent applications but none, as far as we are aware, have found application under real agricultural conditions. The reasons behind may be multiple where the sensitivity to the Sun UV radiation can come in first place. Here we describe a multifunctional glyco-oligomer with 210 kDa which is mainly composed by a 20 kDa polypeptide termed Blad that has been previously shown to be a stable intermediary product of β-conglutin catabolism. This oligomer accumulates exclusively in the cotyledons of Lupinus species, between days 4 and 12 after the onset of germination. Blad-oligomer reveals a plethora of biochemical properties, like lectin and catalytic activities, which are not unusual per si, but are remarkable when found to coexist in the same protein molecule. With this vast range of chemical characteristics, antifungal activity arises almost as a natural consequence. The biological significance and potential technological applications of Blad-oligomer as a plant fungicide to agriculture, its uniqueness stems from being of polypeptidic in nature, and with efficacies which are either equal or greater than the top fungicides currently in the market are addressed
