The prenatal period is composed by the embryonic period and by the fetal period (divided into 3 stages: pseudoglandular, canalicular and saccular). The postnatal period is fundamentally constituted by the alveolar phase. Throughout the many stages there are: progressive cell differentiation, conducting airways, alveoli and alveolar-capillary barrier formation; and pulmonary vascular development. The production of surfactant, fundamental for gas exchange process, is also part of the lung development process.
