Num primeiro momento analisa, em termos conceptuais, em que consiste esta perspectiva e discute as suas possíveis fontes de legitimidade, na Epistemologia da Matemática e na evolução curricular. Num segundo momento analisa os resultados dos estudos efectuados no terreno referentes à aprendizagem dos alunos, à actividade dos professores e à sua formação. O artigo evidencia a existência de muitos estudos comprovando o valor educacional e formativo desta perspectiva, mas também a existência de lacunas e pontos em aberto, relativos, em especial, à ancoragem deste conceito na matemática pura ou aplicada e à integração e gestão curricular.Based in the concept of investigation as the search for articulated and rigorous answers to our own questions, this article analyses the work carried out in this field in mathematics education in Portugal. In a first part, it analyses, in conceptual terms, this perspective and discusses its possible sources of legitimacy, in the epistemology of mathematics and in the evolution of the mathematics curriculum. In a second part, it analyses the results of the studies carried out in the field concerning pupils’ learning, the activity of teachers and teacher education.
