Enquanto espaços erguidos pelos trabalhadores, estas bibliotecas tiveram como missão a elevação educativa, cultural, social e políticas das comunidades operárias. Face à falta de um estudo aprofundado sobre este objecto de estudo, a investigação propôs-se a conhecer o contexto em que estas surgiram, a sua evolução e como se posicionaram perante os debates sobre leitura pública que marcaram o final do século XIX e o século XX. Também se pretendeu saber em que situação estas bibliotecas se encontram na actualidade, onde estão, como são e como funcionam, e a partir daí elaborou-se um conjunto de propostas de preservação com vista à sua valorização. Para tal, realizou-se um inquérito por questionário dirigido ao movimento sindical, assim como a recolha e a análise documental do que foi produzido pelas organizações que possuem bibliotecas sindicais e operárias. Os resultados sugerem que a influência destas bibliotecas em Portugal decaiu bastante desde o início da Ditadura Militar, em 1926, no entanto, ainda sobrevivem acervos bibliográficos importantes e foram identificadas algumas bibliotecas sindicais em funcionamento, que se adaptaram às novas prioridades do movimento sindical. Apesar da sua importância ter diminuído, estas continuam a ser uma ferramenta útil na defesa dos trabalhadores e na ligação dos trabalhadores às suas organizações representativas. Destacam-se os projectos da CGTPIN e de “A Voz do Operário” ao colocarem as suas bibliotecas ao serviço da preservação da memória do movimento operário e sindical e das lutas sociais. Este trabalho procurou investigar, de forma específica, uma das formas de organização dos trabalhadores, estudo que poderá ser útil às organizações que possuem estas bibliotecas, assim como à investigação sobre os movimentos sociais.The present research intended to know the reality of union and workers’ libraries in Portugal. As a space built by the workers, these libraries had the mission of educational, cultural, social, and political elevation of the working-class communities. Due to the lack of an in-depth study on these libraries, the investigation set out to know the context in which they emerged, their evolution and how they positioned themselves in the face of debates on public reading that marked the end of the 19th and the 20th centuries. It was also intended to understand the current situation of these libraries, where they are, how they are and how they work, and from there a set of preservation proposals was elaborated, regarding their value. To this end, a survey questionnaire was carried out aimed at the trade union movement, as well as the collection and analysis of documents produced by organizations that have trade union and workers' libraries. The results indicate that the influence of these libraries in Portugal has declined significantly since the beginning of the Military Dictatorship (1926), however, important bibliographic collections still survive and some union libraries in operation have been identified, which have adapted to the new priorities of the union movement. Although their importance has diminished, they continue to be a useful tool in defending the working class and in linking workers to their representative organizations. The projects of CGTP-IN and “A Voz do Operário” stand out, placing their libraries at the service of preserving the memory of the labor and trade union movement and social struggles.
