É fornecida uma visão aprofundada sobre a freguesia de São Jorge, elucidativa do território do Calhau de São Jorge, conduzido ao abandono pelo crescente declínio das atividades comerciais e portuárias no norte da ilha. Este lugar teve um papel crucial para o desenvolvimento da cidade, tendo, deste modo, uma grande importância a nível histórico, cultural e turístico.This essay intends to explore the topic of Thalassotherapy, contributing to the development of its practice in Portugal, since it is still an undeveloped and debated topic in the country. The island of Madeira becomes the stage for this essay, as it stood out, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, as one of the greatest maritime sanatoriums on the seeking of the cure of respiratory diseases, due to the prophylactic qualities of its maritime climate, as well as the importance of its coastline. An in-depth view of the city of São Jorge is provided, revealing the territory of Calhau de São Jorge, a place led to the abandonment by the growing decline of commercial and port activities in the north of the island.
