Vive-se, em Portugal e por toda a Europa, sentimentos reformistas do ponto de vista disciplinar e até certo ponto do doutrinal, facto que se espelha em reacções e heterodoxias. Nesse ambiente de pré-Reforma e de ecos de Erasmo e de Lutero, monta Gil Vicente as suas criações teatrais, diversificadas no estilo e nos conteúdos, particularmente ricas de problemática sobre Deus e a fé no processo de salvação, o livre arbítrio, o poder da oração e das boas obras, a eucaristia, os símbolos da Paixão de Cristo. Importa sistematizar as suas ideias numa investigação que tem em conta a totalidade da obra, revelando quanto o seu pensamento, pela afirmação da ortodoxia ou, em oposição, pelo riso sarcástico e catártico, não se alheia das posições críticas da época.The Renaissance believer, dominated by human action and the problem of salvation, shows to have a particular awareness of social relations and their connections with spiritual conduct. The attitude of the faithful and the Church towards God and the provisions created by the Church itself is a point raised particularly by humanists. There are disciplinary and up to a certain point doctrinal, reformist feelings in Portugal and in the whole of Europe, a fact that is mirrored in reactions and heterodoxies. In this pre-Reformation environment with echoes of Erasmus and Luther, Gil Vicente stages his theatrical creations, with a variety of styles and contents, particularly rich in issues related to God and to faith in the process of salvation, free will, the power of prayer and good works, the eucharist, and the symbols of the Passion of Christ.
