In order to understand and to consider the strengths and challenges in current policy the writers provide the case study of a day in the life of one ten-year-old deaf child. Tensions and difficulties are uncovered as the school concerned adapts to new demands. It is concluded that inclusive education is a process – a goal that each school strives towards with different rhythms and through different patterns.engDeaf pupilsMainstream schoolsPrimary schoolsSpecial education systemEducation for allEvolution of the Portuguese special education system.
