Só através de uma análise multidisciplinar se pode identificar o que leva um individuo a migrar, qual o percurso do migrante e quais as consequências da sua acção. A história das migrações portuguesas do século XX sofre profundas alterações em consequência do fim do império colonial, que origina o regresso de um significativo contingente de portugueses ao país, da adesão de Portugal à Comunidade Económica Europeia, decisivo para o desenvolvimento da economia, e da queda do regime soviético, que originou um novo fluxo de migrantes em direcção a Portugal entre outros destinos, à procura de melhores condições de vida. Portugal deixou progressivamente de ser um país de emigração, entrando definitivamente, nos anos 90, nas rotas das migrações internacionais, como país de acolhimento. Neste sentido, pretendeu-se com este trabalho traçar o enquadramento jurídico-legal do migrante, o perfil da actual imigração e avaliar o seu impacto no desenvolvimento de Portugal.The intemational migrations are undoubtedly one of the hugest challenges from the beginning of this century for which countries, in order to be prepared, will have to improve their scientifíc knowledge over the subject. Only through deep multidisciplinary analysis it will be possible to identify, the reasons that make an individual migrate, his pathway and the consequences of his action. The Portuguese migration history changes radically during the 20,h century namely because: of the ending of the Portuguese Colonial Empire, which originates a mass retum to the homeland of a large Portuguese community, the accession to the European Economic Community, vital for the Portuguese economic development; and the implosion of the Soviet Union, that originated a new stream of migrants looking for better life conditions. Portugal moved progressively from an emigrant's country to became, during the 90's, a reference base in the intemational migrations route as a welcome country. Thus this paper tries to draw the legal framework of the migrant, the characteristics of the immigration in our days and to evaluate its impact in the development of Portugal.
